THE ALLIANCE PARTNERS WITH PALM HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION
AND CENTER FOR HOPE OF THE SIERRAS FOR THREE SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS
SEPTEMBER 1 and SEPTEMBER 2, 2009
The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness is proud to partner with Palm Healthcare Foundation and Center for Hope of the Sierras for three presentations on Diabulimia: Diabetes and Eating Disorders.
Over 30 percent of patients with type 1 diabetes manipulate insulin to lose weight. The term "diabulimia" has been used in websites, chat rooms and blogs by those who suffer for years. Only recently this term is cited in publications for the public and health communities. Insulin omission offers a quick solution of purging calories via glucosuria. The mortality rate increases three-fold and the age of mortality decreases by almost a decade. Diabetes educators serve crucial roles in identifying the risks and facilitating their treatments.
Join Lorraine Platka-Bird, Ph.D., RD, Nutritionist of Center for Hope of the Sierras' Diabulimia Program for an educational presentation on the basics of diabulimia and how to work with patients that have both diabetes and eating disorders.
Presentations will be held:
Tuesday, September 1, 2009 from 10 - 11:30 am
Boca Raton Community Hospital
Education Building, Dawson Theater
Tuesday, September 1, 2009 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm

NATIONAL EATING DISORDERS SCREENING PROGRAM
CollegeResponse®: National Eating Disorders Screening Program®
The CollegeResponse® National Eating Disorders Screening Program (NEDSP) is designed to educate and screen college students for eating disorders, and to connect at-risk students with the resources they need.
NEDSP provides tools to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder in both men and women. Information about healthy lifestyles, balanced eating and exercise, and the role of eating disorders in athletics are also important educational pieces of the program.
The Alliance for Eating Disorders is a proud sponsor of NEDSP. Since 2003, we have donated over 85,000 brochures to their screening packets.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
TREATMENT STUDY FOR ADULTS WITH ANOREXIA NERVOSA
Stanford University Eating Disorders Program and James D. Lock, MD, Ph.D.
Stanford University is conducting a 3 year NIH sponsored study examining the effectiveness of outpatient cognitive-behavioral therapy for AN, independently or in combination with a novel treatment which helps patients to examine their own thought processes.
Who can participate?
Adults (women and men) age 18 and over
Current diagnosis of anorexia nervosa
Medically stable for outpatient treatment
Able to speak and read English
Willing to be randomized to either treatment condition
Able to make a 1 year commitment
Treatments:
The patient has an equal chance of being randomized (a process like flipping a coin) to CBT, or CBT CRT.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a common treatment for AN aimed at helping with thought processes associated with the disorder. In this treatment you will meet one on one with a therapist for 28 sessions.
Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) is focused on changing how one thinks, rather than initially focusing on shape and weight concerns. The study seeks to determine if CRT prior to CBT will improve response rates to CBT.
How Can I Participate?

Goodbye Ed, Hello Me : Recover from Your Eating Disorder and Fall in Love with Life
By: Jenni Schaefer
Don't Battle an Eating Disorder Forever- Recover from It Completely!
Jenni Schaefer and Ed (eating disorder) are no longer on speaking terms, not even in her most difficult moments. In her bestseller, Life Without Ed, Jenni learned to treat her eating disorder as a relationship, not a condition-enabling her to break up with Ed once and for all.
In Goodbye Ed, Hello Me Jenni shows you that being fully recovered is not just about breaking free from destructive behaviors with food and having a healthy relationship with your body; it also means finding joy and peace in your life.
“Every young woman and man interested in overcoming disordered eating should read this treasure of a book.”
-Leigh Cohn, M.A.T., CEDS, Editor-in-Chief, Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention
“The beauty of Jenni's written journey through her tormented relationship with Ed is that it is honest, passionate, hopeful-but, most important, it ultimately assures the reader that life really can move on.”
